welp, InDesign is ever so much more powerful than Publisher... but it's obfuscatory. Fortunately OpenOffice.org's "writer" (free word processor that does like unto Microsoft ) doesn't do the Microsoft Word mystery-formatting with graphics and text boxes. Unfortunately I couldn't actually *do* text boxes. Just gonna have to figure out InDesign.
In the meantime, 'Fireworks' rocks for doing stuff like annotating maps and fading out the parts you don't care about (IF you remember to make your layers :)) ... there iwll be pdfs in teh future!
