The grapevine tells me taht our dear Governor decided that saying planners "Shall" consider bicycles and pedestrians in planning would be, um, too indicative of gonadal tissue. Okay, it would involve caring about the lives of people he doesn't need to care about (most of us). So, "complete streets" aren't getting his okay for ILlinois.

Unfortunately he's already alienated so many people that I am sure that letting him know my reaction would matter even less than my well-being does.

On the plus side, today the "balanced schedule" schools did their "bike and walk to school" day... and at Barkstall, it didn't really seem like a big deal because there's a bike rack full of cycles there usually. IT's a cheesy bike rack (suggesting the typical pattern of the Folks IN Power being out of touch with the needs of the people they affect with their decisions), but it's used. Lots and lots of folks were walking and riding... and not because it was a special day :)

No surprise, though, that when people have tried to engage the folks concerned with traffic, they've come at it from the "oh, the cars are having trouble?" point of view instead of considering the peds and cyclists.
